Preludes
These appear before the first day.
What is gathered early may matter later.

I speak without a mouth,
guide without a hand,
and when you follow me too closely,
you become lost.
I exist only when you notice what’s missing.
The moment you name me, I change.
I can be held without fingers
and broken without sound.
I am born in silence
and die in certainty.
I am the thing you chase
that becomes smaller the closer you get.
I reward the patient
and punish the hurried.
I have no weight,
yet I can crush a decision.
I appear at the end of questions,
and vanish at the start of answers.
I am made of lines that do not exist
and numbers that do not sleep.
I tell you where you are
without ever telling you who you are.
The more you remove,
the more I reveal.
I am never found by searching—
only by seeing.
I am a door that opens inward.
The key is never metal,
and the lock is never seen.
I am the question behind the question.
I am what remains
when the riddle is solved.
I arrive before the answer
and linger after it.
I live between certainty and fear.
I can make a room feel watched
without adding anyone to it.
I am strongest when nothing moves.
I am built from fragments,
proven by patience,
and destroyed by sharing.
I am not the lock.
I am not the key.
Yet without me, both are useless.
I can be true and still mislead you.
I can be false and still guide you.
I am the line you cross
without moving your feet.

Rewards

I do not arrive only as cash,
though cash waits for those who reach the end first.
I move quietly through cards, credit, and hidden links,
opening access where none was promised.
What follows may become a trip,
then a trip again —
sometimes by cars,
sometimes by plane,
always by decision.
Some pass forward into Cycle two
without beginning again.
I leave time behind in watches,
mark moments on a computer,
wait inside a phone,
and appear again on a tablet.
I take form as a compass and an engraved map,
as a framed print or framed photograph,
written into a leather journal with a fountain pen,
or sealed behind a metal key in a lockbox.
I sit quietly as a watch, a wristwatch, or a desk clock,
heard through headphones, earbuds, or a speaker,
guided by a keyboard, mouse, and laptop stand.
I travel in a backpack, a travel bag, or a suitcase,
held by a passport holder,
recorded in a notebook,
seen through a camera on a tripod.
I reveal myself as a flashlight, a penlight,
a pocket knife, or a multitool,
resting beside a mug or a thermos,
wrapped in a jacket, gloves, or a scarf.
I remember the world as a model globe or wall map,
remain on a desk as a desk organizer,
endure as a book or hardcover book,
weigh history as a collectible coin,
or stand silent as a plaque.
I am not one reward.
I am what remains
when the path decides to give something back.
